The Four Main Canals

The Grachtengordel forms a network of concentric waterways built during the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. This historic ring became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010.

The historic canal ring consists of four primary waterways: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. Together, they define the central layout of Amsterdam.

You can walk the tree-lined streets or take a boat to view the 17th-century merchant houses. Stay off the reddish-colored cycle paths and watch carefully for oncoming bicycles while exploring.
